This photo is the Raising og the American Flag on Mt. Suribachi (spelling ?) on the island of Iwo Jima in WWII. It is actually ther second raising of the flag and the photo was taken by Joe Rosenthal.

an old old movie to watch is "the sands of Iwo Jima". nothing to factual, but I love seeing them raise the flag.
