2007 was the deadliest year for US troops in Iraq

The following is from WBOC 16

BAGHDAD (AP) - Progress is coming at a high price in Iraq. Violence has plummeted over the past six months. But 2007 is still the deadliest year for the U.S. military in Iraq since the 2003 invasion, with 899 troops killed. The previous high was in 2004, when 850 troops were killed.
American military deaths in 2007 peaked in May with 126 troops killed. Seven months later, commanders say America's aggressive tack against al-Qaida in Iraq has helped cut that number to 21 deaths so far this month.
U.S.-led forces have had crucial help this year battling the terrorist organization from Shiite militias' cease-fires and a Sunni revolt against insurgents. U.S. officials also believe Iran's inaction has helped quiet Iraq. Officials say Iraq's neighbor has cut back on its flow of suspected aid and weapons to Shiite fighters.
